Beautiful place - 9/2/2013
I found the other reviews interesting stating that the housing market is priced high. This is very subjective and based on what they've looked at. We live in NJ and are looking to move to Southport for retirement. We visited Southport in August and spent a day with a realtor looking at homes.
Just to give comparisons.. our 2000sq ft home in NJ is about $400,000 and in Southport is under $200,000. Our property taxes are almost $9,000 a year compared to about $1,200 in Southport. To us, housing is VERY inexpensive in Southport.

Housing cost are high in the historic district, but the recession has brought many homes into an affordable range. Taxes are cheap compared to most of America. You do pay a seperate Southport tax of .18 that I sometimes wonder what extra services that county residence don't get I'm paying for. I think Southport is a great place to live and worth a few sheckles Read More

Southport, NC - 4/4/2008
Southport is a great place to live if you can stand the cost of living. Housing prices are high, taxes are high, and utilities are expensive. The city of Southport is also the electricity provider and it is much more expensive than electricity in surrounding communities. Even homeowners insurance is high because Southport is located on the coast. We have lived in Southport for the last six years, but will consider moving when we retire because of the high cost of Read More
